WHAT ARE WRINKLES?


As we get older, facial muscles begin to slacken and your skin becomes less elastic. This creates fine lines, moderate lines or deeper folds in the skin that we call wrinkles. They are found where your facial muscles move and you can get frown lines, forehead lines and squint lines at the corners of your eyes (crow's feet). Deeper folds may appear between your nose and mouth known as nasolabial folds. These wrinkles are as a result of lost facial volume and tone that occurs as we age.


WHAT CAUSES WRINKLES?


Wrinkles are part of the natural ageing process. Genetics play an important part, however, environmental factors, such as ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and smoking, can dry your skin and make wrinkles appear at a younger age. An unhealthy diet may also cause wrinkles to appear at a younger age.


SUN EXPOSURE



Wrinkles usually appear on areas of your skin that are most exposed to the sun, such as your face, neck, backs of your hands and upper arms. This is because UV radiation from the sun damages the DNA in your skin cells, which causes your skin to age. Whilst some sunlight is important because your skin uses it to produce vitamin D, too much sun is harmful and people who spend a lot of time in the sun, particularly without protecting their skin, with sun screen may develop fine lines and wrinkles at an earlier age.  The Milecross Clinic always recommends using a daily standalone broad spectrum SPF of 30 or more every day as suitable protection.

SMOKING



Cigarette smoke affects your skin in several ways. It dries your skin out and it constricts your blood vessels. This reduces the supply of oxygen and vital nutrients to your skin. Research suggests that smoking may also cause an increase in the production of an enzyme that breaks down collagen – the part of your skin that keeps it looking firm. As a result, people who smoke are more likely to have facial wrinkles at a younger age. Puckering up your lips when you smoke also causes lines to form around your mouth (known as smoker's lines).

Maintaining a natural look.


It is important to patients not to look suddenly very different and to maintain a 'natural look'.  With the right amount, the face can retain its natural expressive qualities. Injection should be by an experienced and qualified injector who can make sure that the correct amount is injected in precisely the right places.  In this way the desired result with a natural look can be achieved.  Since 2007, smoothing lines and wrinkles with filler gels is one of the most common cosmetic procedures.


Quick, Straightforward and Safe


The process is very straight forward and quick.  An initial consultation is required to determine if this treatment is suitable for the patient or if other procedures are needed to correct the focus of the patient's concern. 


A plan is then given to the patient and a further appointment is made for the treatment to commence.  Treatment effects are seem straight away although final results can take 2 to 4 weeks for the gel to settle and integrate into the skin's tissues.  At this point, you may wish to return for another session.


A numbing cream can be applied prior to treatment to make it more comfortable and our practitioner will use techniques to make the procedure as safe and manageable as possible.


This treatment can last from three to nine months.
